Local Wineries Open Doors for Free Vineyard Tours This Weekend At The First Lennox and Addington Wine and Cheese Event
NAPANEE, ON (Sept. 14, 2009) – This coming weekend, September 19 and 20, has been declared Lennox and Addington (L&A) County Weekend at the local wineries, where visitors are invited to free vineyard tours as well as wine-tasting, food and entertainment at the first L&A Wine and Cheese event.
It’s being organized jointly by the two local wineries, Bergeron Estate Winery and Thirty Three Vines, both of whom produce award-winning wines in the region.
“Lennox and Addington County has so much to offer in terms of its natural rural beauty that many people aren’t even aware that we have two very fine wineries right in our own backyard,” says Stephen Paul, Lennox and Addington County’s Manager of Economic Development.
“It’s true, a lot of people aren’t aware that we’re here, even though they may drink our wines in local restaurants from Kingston to Belleville, so this is a great ‘get to know your neighbours’ event,” says Paul Minaker, winemaker and owner of Thirty Three Vines, which won an award at last fall’s ArteVino event in Belleville for its Cabernet Franc.
“It’s all about coming together as a community and celebrating all there is to offer in this region,” adds David Bergeron, head winemaker at Bergeron Estate Winery, which he co-owns with his wife Mary and brother Ted and his wife Heidi Bergeron. The winery has won numerous awards, including Best Light Red paired with food for its Gamay Noir at last year’s Taste the County Event. “We have excellent soil in our area that is able to produce some remarkably fine wines.”
The L&A Wine and Cheese Weekend will run both days from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Visitors are invited to meet the wine-makers as well as enjoy a free tour of the vineyards and taste the local wines – from Chardonnay to Pinot Noir, Gamay Noir, Cabernet Franc, Riesling, Merlot, a Merlot/Cabernet Franc blend, to a Vidal/Riesling blend.
In addition, visitors can sample local cheese and enjoy local entertainment. Local jazz band La Roque & White will play at Bergeron Estate on Saturday. The musical group playing at Thirty Three Vines on Sunday, the 20th is going to be John McKinney and Friends. Both wineries are located on the Loyalist Parkway (HWY #33) just West of Conway and East of Adolphustown over-looking Alolphus Reach.
Paul says the event offers a great opportunity for visitors to chalk up a ‘best day ever’ experience as part of the county’s “The Best Day Ever in L&A” campaign, where residents and visitors are encouraged to submit their stories, photos and videos about their “best day ever” in L&A at www.bestdayever.ca.
Lennox and Addington County is situated in southeastern Ontario, conveniently centered between the cities of Kingston and Belleville. The county covers a sprawling area of 2,841 square kilometres, stretching from Lake Ontario northward over 130 kilometers to Renfrew County. The northern half of the county forms part of the Canadian Shield. The southern half of the county is essentially rural, with the exception of the Town of Greater Napanee and the suburban community of Amherstview within Loyalist Township. The rural area is dotted with a number of villages and hamlets which function as commercial and tourism centres for the surrounding area. Settled at first by United Empire Loyalists and later by American and European pioneers, the County is alive with reminders of a rich past: the family names of the earliest pioneers endure, and hundreds of grand Victorian homes and farmsteads still stand as symbols of an era of hard work and bustling growth, their survival and vitality a testament to the vision of the founders.
